Poster Homage/Copy

  1. Collect a range of posters by genre. Collect at least 10 posters per genre, collect posters for at least 3 genres. You can go further and arrange by sub-genre as well if you wish.
  2. During this process be sure to include posters which you think you can recreate.
  3. Create a copy or homage to one of these posters. Use images you have taken yourself as far as as possible and consider this when choosing the poster to recreate- don’t pick a poster that will rely too heavily on found images.
  4. The object is to make a close as copy as possible but you do have artistic license to change things like backgrounds, genders of characters, names etc. For example, if the main character is holding a stapler rather than a gun as in the real version that’s fine. . .
  5. This is an exercise in developing Photoshop poster skills and your understanding of poster conventions.
  6. If you finish your first poster quickly- do another.
  7. Analyse your collections of poster by genre. Make a range of comments picking out conventions of genre:
  • How is genre communicated?
  • What do the posters have in common in terms of images/font/lighting/colour pallette
  • How are themes communicated? (e.g dynamic shots, quirky facial expression, colours)
  • How is language used to generate interest? Consider titles and taglines.

8. Analyse the professional poster you did a copy of. Use the questions on the link below and look closely at the examples.

9. Include your poster copy and explain what tools you used to create the required effects. Include your original images and discuss briefly what you had to do to get the right image.

A range of styles of poster:

Typically posters are often dominated by striking portrait style images of main characters which are blended into or around significant locations, objects or scenes. There are many ways to present the images in posters- below I have included a range of posters and some of these show the innovative ways posters can be designed. Pay attention to blending, use of faces and expression and lines to divide up the poster.
